I remember when Phil Lynott died. It wasn’t shocking or surprising, yet I was infuriated that he checked out so young and in such a cheap way. IIRC some woman sold her story of his last night alive to the British tabloids; a musician of his talent and skills deserved better.
Would U2 have kept such a stranglehold on the global image of Irish rock ‘n’ roll had Philo kicked “the stuff” and kept making music into the ’90s and beyond? Who knows? But rock music (Irish and otherwise) is far poorer for his passing.
It’s easy to judge people harshly for their addictions, and infinitely more challenging to get a grasp on what sort of pain they’re taking addictive substances to deal with.
